Effortlessly Timeless: A Guide to Styling Your Next Photo Session
"What on earth are we going to wear?" It’s the number one question I get asked, and I promise, it doesn't have to be a source of stress! Choosing your wardrobe is the first step in creating a cohesive, high-end look for your gallery. The goal isn't to look like you’re wearing a uniform; it’s to look like the most polished, intentional version of yourselves.
The Color Palette (And Where to Start): If you’re feeling overwhelmed, here is my best piece of advice: Mom, choose your outfit first. Pick the dress or ensemble that makes you feel radiant, confident, and most like you. Once you’ve found your look, we can easily build the rest of the family’s wardrobe around it. I recommend a foundation of neutrals and pastels—creams, whites, and soft tans act as a natural reflector, bouncing beautiful light back onto your faces. From there, we can pull in navy, sage, or jewel tones to complement your choice. The goal isn't to match perfectly. My golden rule? Choose 3–4 coordinating colors rather than matching perfectly. This creates a visual rhythm that draws the eye to your faces, not your clothes.
The Finishing Touches: Texture is your best friend on camera! Think chunky knits, flowing linen, or delicate lace. These details add "soul" to an image that flat fabrics can’t match. Avoid loud logos or tiny, tight patterns that can "buzz" on digital sensors. By focusing on a palette of Cream, Sage Green, and Dusty Blue, you create a look that is soft, breathable, and perfectly coordinated. When you feel confident in what you’re wearing, it shows in every frame captured.
3 Golden Rules for Styling:
1. Start with Mom: It is usually easiest to pick Mom's outfit first since dresses often have more pattern or texture. Build everyone else's look around hers.
2. Limit Patterns: If Mom is wearing a floral print, everyone else should stick to solids or very subtle textures (like a knit or linen) to avoid "visual noise."
3. Shoes: For in-home sessions, barefoot is best! It is more "honest and real." If you're outdoors, stick to neutral leather sandals or clean boots. Avoid athletic sneakers.
